Early morning Doha

My brother stays in Hungary and has been after me for ages to come and visit and meet my four year old niece, so that was one definite.

“What day is it?” asked Pooh. “Today!” squeaked Piglet. “My favourite day!” said Pooh.

And what a day for me it is too!! This trip started off as me cycling ‘The Camino’, a pilgrimage through Spain, of which there are many different routes, but in my Dad’s memory, I was going to do his final route (which he never completed due to ill health), The Via de la Plate. 987km’s from Seville to Santiago de Compostela. My dad and I had discussed many times us doing one of the rides together but circumstance and life had other ideas. After his passing in December 2015, I planned to ride the route anyway.

On my return from the UK for my SA holiday, the bike got dusted off and I hit the road. A couple of training rides left me in no doubt of the fact that my knees, which were my main worry, would cope fine. Then I decided to do a training ride with a 12kg pack on my back (that’s about the weight I would have carried) and that’s when things changed. An old injury that I hadn’t taken into account came to say ‘hi’.

I fell down a flight of stairs in 2007 and cracked my coccyx. It healed over time…or so I thought! One training ride with weighted backpack left me unable to sit properly for a week and in no doubt that I would not be cycling the Camino. I am not walking fit, and you don’t ‘just go walk The Camino’ without proper preparation, and my Schengen visa application, which I requested as 90 days, was granted, but for 30 days, which seriously hampered my plans, so I started an eeny-meeny-miny-mo selection of where my hoarded Euro’s would take me and for how long.

I have long dreamed of going to Europe, Austria in particular, as that’s where my heritage lies, along with Germany (somewhat of a pavement special I am); so those 2 were next in line. With my visa having been granted by the Spanish Embassy, I figured I had better make that my country of entry, and Barcelona being on the coast made that choice an easy one, and of course what’s a visit to Europe without seeing the iconic Eiffel Tower….so the choice was made.…in a relatively logical fashion of Barcelona, Paris, Brussels (because it’s there), Munich, Vienna and Hungary. (Images courtesy of Google, except Doha.)

With enough time left before I had to be back in the UK (I’m only allowed 90 days a year out on my ancestral visa), I decided to stop in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi to see friends and then to Qatar to see my daughter and her family; before heading back to the UK and work.
