"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln

After a late lie in and some fun with a balloon popping game, we headed into the desert where a group of the kids SA ex-pat friends had set up camp for the day.

I went on a bit of a walkabout, and was fascinated as to how many different animal tracks I found, yet there were no creatures

to be seen at all! Apparently the night wanderers in the Qatar desert are Fork-Tongue Desert Monitor Lizard; Ethiopian Hedgehog; Arabian Gazelle; Arabian Oryx; Kangaroo Rat; Rüppell’s Fox and the Sand Cat, so the tracks could have been from any of them!

Much excitement and gasps of amazement as we watched some dragsters racing on the dunes later in the afternoon; even a paraglider put in an appearance.

The desert sands have eroded over time, into fine balls of grit. When the wind blows, it gets into everything!

A great day out was made complete by a stunning sunset.

The cars are dwarfed by the size of the dunes, and yet the drivers show no fear! Any spectators at the top of the dunes are like bullseyes for the drivers, who head directly at them and then turn sharply at the last minute, showering their hapless targets with fine, gritty sand. I was glad we were at ground level and behind the drive line.
