"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln

We visited the Magic Festival Village funfair but were very early and nothing much had opened yet, so my grandson had his choice of fun rides to go on. There were some really fun things for him to do!

All the walkways were decorated – some with leaves, others with lampshades, all very bright and festive! We strolled around the stalls, while many an intrepid salesman beckoned us in to see the wares, but we knew their tricks and once inside the stall they tried to ply you with every item possible, so we looked in from the doorways until the heat got the better of us again and we headed for the car, and home.

We had dinner at a restaurant at The Pearl, one of the more affluent areas in Doha, and then wandered around enjoying the coolness of the night air. The Pearl is an artificial island spanning nearly four million square metres and is the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals.

The name “The Pearl” was chosen because the island is built on one of Qatar’s previous major pearl diving sites. Some of the yachts moored in the small harbour are indicative of the wealth in the area.

On my last night in Qatar, we went to the local golf club,                                                                         which is a once a week night out for dinner.

The coolness of the swimming pool also providing a welcome break from the heat.                               And so my time in Qatar was over and I headed back to

South Africa to see family and friends there, happy to be heading home albeit with a sad and heavy heart, as I had learned the day before that a very close friend had gone to the big brewery in the sky. We had spoken less than 2 weeks prior to her passing and planned to meet up in the week I arrived. I was glad of being with loved ones when I got the news, as it’s never easy to say goodbye, and hearing news like that when so far away from home makes it all the more difficult.
