I miss my family & grandkids plenty while away from home, so spend as much time as possible with them when I’m home. One of the outings I took the kids on was to the zoo. We wandered around the war museum first and then spent a few hours traipsing around the zoo, the kids getting excited when they found their favourite animals. Ice-creams at the end of the day completed a fabulous outing.

Established in 1904, the JHB Zoo covers an area of 140 acres and houses about 2000 individual animals of 320 different species, and was started on part of the original Braamfontein farm which was purchased to explore for minerals. When that failed, the land was converted as a timber plantation in 1891 called Sachsenwald (Saxonwold).

The zoo, and neighbouring park, Zoo Lake, are one of very few public areas that were never segregated during the apartheid era. In the same grounds as the zoo is the South African National War Museum which was officially opened in 1947 to preserve the history of South Africa’s involvement in WW2.

In 1975, the museum was renamed the South African National Museum of Military History and included all conflicts that South Africans have been involved in. In 2010 it was officially renamed the Ditsong National Museum of Military History.
