"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln

As we were driving back so the snow became less and less visible. The countryside that, on the outgoing journey, was white with snow was now only wet and the grass green again, not white.

In the middle of a field, next to the main road, I see a church – behind some trees, with a small wall around it and nothing else in close proximity. I asked what building is that……..and got another history lesson……The Church of Saint Oswald stands just beyond the location of the wooden cross left by Oswald at Heavenfield, the night before the battle of Heavenfield (AD635).

The present building, the third on the same site, was built in 1817. Oswald (circa AD604 – 5 August 642) was King of Northumbria from AD634

until his death in AD642, and is venerated as a saint.

Legend has it that the spot where he died has come to be associated with miracles of all sorts; people even taking dirt from the site, which led to a hole being dug almost 2m deep. It was said that Oswald’s right arm was take  by a bird (perhaps a raven) to a nearby ash tree, which gave the tree ageless vigor; when the bird dropped the arm onto the ground, a spring emerged from the ground. Both the tree and the spring  were, according to legend, subsequently associated with healing miracles.

A fabulously interesting day.

The snow an added bonus, which made the day that much more special!
