"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln

I again did the hop-on-hop-off tour in Budapest. The bus tour included a boat trip to Margaret Island, a 2.5 km long x 500 metres wide island, 238 acres of parkland in the middle of the Danube. Mostly covered by landscape parks, the island is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious centre. Before the 14th century the island was called Insula leporum (Island of Rabbits) before being named Saint Margaret in the 14th century. Margaret was the daughter of Béla IV of Hungary, and she lived in the Dominican convent on the island.

Besides photos of the scenery, I had fun during the cruise, sneaking candid shots of fellow travellers. Once on the island, I spent a few hours wandering around and then walked across the Margaret Bridge back into the city, spending an entire day walking around.

Margaret Bridge or Margit híd is a three-way bridge in Budapest, connecting Buda and Pest across the Danube. It is the second-northernmost and second-oldest public bridge in Budapest.

Designed and built between 1872 and 1876, Margaret Bridge is the second permanent bridge in Budapest after Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

The bridge leads up to Margaret Island, its two parts enclosing 165 degrees with each other at the embranchment towards the island. The reason for this unusual geometry is that the small extension to connect to Margaret Island was hastily inserted into the original design but not built until two decades later due to lack of funds.
