"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln

Enroute to my next job, I slept over in Penrith. The castle ruins are right next to the hotel, and with a lot of mist around, it looked quite eerie. I wanted a few photos.

Playing on the grass was the dog which belonged to the owners of the hotel and when I picked up her ball and called to her, so she’d see where I threw it, she immediately came over, tail wagging. She recognised my voice from previous visits!

I played for a while, then took myself indoors, it was just too cold to stay out!

The bus ride to the village I was working in wasn’t the warmest, as the country was in the grip of a big-freeze and, much to my delight, there had been widespread snow, more on the distant mountains than in our garden though.

Inbetween the snow there was the usual winter rain, and I spent a lot of time indoors, taking photos – sometimes with my camera and other times with my cell phone – from the relative safety of the front porch or the cosy warmth of inside the sitting room! Such beautiful surroundings, even on rainy days!

On one of the days when I did venture into town, I came across what I thought was shattered car or truck windscreen glass in the road – until I picked it up and realised it was ice!

The river flowing through the small market-town was flowing quite fast due to all the melt coming off the surrounding mountains.

Looking at the high water markers on the embankment wall, I wondered how much water was needed to top the highest marker!

We had a light snowfall overnight, but the mountains got the majority. I love the silence after a snowfall and the sound snow makes as it crunches underfoot, so made a few trips outdoors, especially for the magnificent sunsets! The snow didn’t last long in the low lying areas and valleys, though.

One day in particular, the clouds after the storm had my lovely client and I fascinated. There was a fairly strong wind blowing down the mountains, and watching the sunbeams shining through the clouds as they raced across the valley, had us both entranced!

The light-rays filtering down through each break in the clouds skimmed across the huge valley in a matter of seconds, dissipating and disappearing as the clouds closed in again, only to be chased by the next rods of light, shining down on the sodden ground below.

I could stand looking at these views, every day, all day. A thousand photos could never fully portray the beauty and serenity of this place! It’s always the same, yet different every day!

A fabulous time spent in an area where the beauty is indescribable, caring for a client who is a gem. I don’t know who enjoys the magnificent scenery the most – she who has seen it every day for over 30 years, yet still delights in watching a storm approach, or gleefully welcomes the quiet snowfall; or me that only gets a chance to surround myself with this enchanting natural artistry a few times a year! I shall be sad to leave but I will be back as soon as possible!
